Run both IE6 & IE7 at the same time

I recently was working on a website for a client, and needed to make sure that the site works in Internet Explorer 6. Yes, that’s right there are still people out there using version 6. Cross-browser compatibility is a big issue that really wasn’t addressed in IE6. Instead, Microsoft released IE7 and tried to force the Windows XP users to upgrade. Most people did without knowing via Windows Update. Under normal circumstances I would have just uninstalled IE7, and ran IE6, but with Windows SP3 it has disallowed uninstalling IE7. It was very simple to do the following.

Anyway, I came across a IE6 standalone package that runs even when IE7 is installed. It lets you have both IE6 and IE7 open simultaneously. This has been very handy in my line of work. You can download the IE6 Standalone file from here:

Facebook Toolbar for Firefox

I recently came across this plugin for Firefox that lets you have the facebook status feed on the left of your web browser, as well as a toolbar in the top of the browser. It is great for keeping an eye on your Facebook notifications without being distracted by being on the entire website. Here is an example of my Firefox window with the Facebook sidebar that shows the status of my friends.

The Facebook Toolbar for Firefox is a free extension for Firefox that lets you extend your Facebook experience into your everyday browsing.

Note: Firefox pop-up blocker might prevent the download box from opening. To fix this, follow the directions below:

  • Look at the message at the top of your browser that says “Firefox has prevented this site from asking to install software…” At the far right corner there is an “Options” button.
  • Click on the “Options” button to see the “Allow Sites” pop-up.
  • Click “Allow” on the site developers.facebook.com and close the popup.
  • Click the download button again to install the toolbar.
